Attendance – Parish Policy
When a student accumulates five (5) or more unexcused absences per semester or fifteen (15) excused absences, the following actions will be taken:
A letter from the Child's school will be sent to parents requiring attendance at a Truancy Hearing or arrangements made for attendance recovery at the school.
Parents will get a chance to explain and correct the attendance problem by meeting with the Principal.
Failure to comply will result in the parents being turned over to the Vernon Parish Child Welfare and Attendance Director , the FINS Officer (Families in Need of Services) and the Vernon Parish District Attorney for further review.
Prior to this procedure, the following will have taken place:
Schools track attendance each day. After three (3) days being absent a letter is sent to parents
After (5) days unexcused absences parents will be contacted and arrangements will be made for attendance recovery at the school.
If that fails, a Truancy Hearing notification is sent to parents
The only days not counted in the “5 days” are days excused due to extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances include: extended personal or emotional illness as verified by a physician, an extended hospital stay as verified by a physician, extended recuperation from an accident as verified by a physician, prior school system approved travel for education, extended contagious disease within a family as verified by a physician, death in family, or a natural catastrophe and/or disaster. For any other extenuating circumstance parents must make a formal appeal in accordance with the due process established by the Vernon Parish School Board.
For your information and for the protection of your child, a letter is automatically printed and sent home once your child misses 3, 5, and 8 days of school.
The Vernon Parish School Board has an automated call system which notifies parents when your child is absent, disciplined through the office, or receives a failing grade. This is designed to keep parents informed and children safe.
Students not meeting attendance mandates are required to attend summer school in order to be promoted.
**Summer Attendance Recovery: Parents will be charged a rate of $15.00 per day, a maximum of $150.00 for their child to attend Summer attendance recovery.
